RICE (Top 10 Features)

RICE (Top 10 Features)

Prioritizing Program Backlog Using RICE (Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort)

The RICE scoring model helps you make informed prioritization decisions by quantifying the value and effort of each feature. Just like WSJF, RICE enables structured, data-driven discussions during PI Planning.

To begin prioritizing with RICE, go to the section labeled “Top 10+ Features (RICE)” in your Program Backlog.

Setting RICE Parameters

Each feature is scored using the following four parameters:

Parameter

Description

Reach

How many users will be affected by this feature in a given time period.

Impact

The level of effect this feature will have if delivered.

Confidence

How certain you are about your estimates for Reach, Impact, and Effort.

Effort

Estimated time to complete the feature (in person-days, t-shirt sizes, or numeric effort points).

These are rated on a scale of 1 to 10. (Optional: You may choose Low–Medium–High labels instead.)

How the RICE Score is Calculated

Once all four values are set, the RICE score is automatically calculated using the formula:

RICE Score = (Reach × Impact × Confidence) / Effort

Features are sorted automatically in descending order of RICE score.

Resetting RICE Scores

To clear RICE values for a feature:

· Click the reset icon beside the feature row.

· All parameter values will be cleared and RICE score will reset.

Sorting Program Backlog by RICE

In the Program Board, sort your backlog by RICE score:

Sorting Options:

· Highest First – Features with the highest RICE scores at the top.

· Lowest First – Features with the lowest scores at the top.

· Remove Sorting – Enables manual drag-and-drop reordering again.

Tips & Best Practices

· Use RICE when comparing similarly sized features where impact may vary.

· Ensure all four fields are filled to get an accurate score.

· Combine with WSJF for deeper prioritization conversations.

· Use RICE early in backlog grooming before finalizing scope for PI Planning.
